Home Security Tips During the Holidays

While many of us enjoy the festivities and celebrations this time of year brings, crime has other plans. Although it is not a cheerful topic to discuss, it is important for all to be aware that crime rates spike during the holiday season. Pressure and economic stress contribute to the motivation of criminal behavior and while we may not be able to stop others from attempting to commit a crime, we can certainly practice security measures that prevent them from being successful.

Secure Your Home When Away

Whether you’re leaving for five minutes or five days, making sure your house is secure is critical before driving away from your property. All windows and doors (including the garage) should be closed and locked. Burglars aren’t afraid to do what it takes to enter your home, so windows and doors on upper levels should also be locked when away. Many have often hidden a key in the event that they have misplaced their own or a guest needs to enter their home. Rather than try to hide your key where a burglar may find it, invest in a lock box or give one to a trusted neighbor. If you are planning to be gone for a while, set your lights to a timer to make it appear as if you are occupying your home.

Keep Valuables Out of Sight

While some of your valuables may be important to the aesthetics of your home, keeping them out of plain sight is a must. This can be done by purchasing window coverings. There are other important items that should be concealed, including jewelry, heirlooms, passports, social security cards, and more.

Be Aware of Package and Mail Delivery

The holidays are synonymous with packages and gifts. One minute your package is delivered to your doorstep, the next it’s snatched up by a porch pirate. Being aware of important package and mail delivery is essential to avoid theft. To prevent purchases or important mail from being stolen, track them as well as set specific delivery instructions to ensure they are given to only you or someone you have designated to receive them.

Keep in Contact With Neighbors

Lastly, keeping in contact with neighbors can be very beneficial not only during the holidays but every day! When away from your property, they can keep an eye on your home and help with any responsibilities, including bringing in mail, watering plants, taking out and bringing in trash cans, and more. This will give the illusion that someone is home, deterring criminal behavior.
